These are lightweight instruments that require no other instrument, computer, etc., to operate and perform the function intended. They are often carried into the field to identify the possible presence of radioactive material and where it is. Many identify what the isotope is and give good indications of both the dose being received by the operator and the identity of the isotope(s) present.

These instruments are most often installed in a fixed laboratory setting or in the field, mounted on an apparatus, to perform a well defined purpose. Additional instruments, such as a computer or ADC or power supply may be required for operation.
